I came across this nice article that I thought it could benefit many, especially to those who are "new" in their career.
Workplace conflict often time resulted in parties focusing solely on individual needs (or agenda). A mindset shift is key to avoiding conflict - focus on the common goals.
Afterall, we are collaborating because we are working for the same company. So focus on the bigger company goals rather than individual agenda.

Today, I came across an inspiration quote from Robert Frost, "In three words, I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: It goes on". It's a sentiment that resonates deeply with my career experience.
The organization I was leading once years ago was suddenly cut down to a third of its size. It felt like we were on a sinking ship with no lifeboats in sight. It was the sheer resilience and optimism that got us through these overwhelming challenges and uncertainty. By fostering “we quit, or we thrive” belief into every single team member, the team didn't just survive; we soared to new heights. We became a cohesive and complementary multi-function organization, offering each other support when we needed it most. We grow personally and professionally. Eventually the organization thrived and facilitated 10x increase in valuation, integrated 9 M&A, scaled 400%, yet delivered >75% Gross Margin, 100% SLA, and maintained 95% global retention 6 years in a row.
Positive leadership style. In today’s ever-evolving modern world and dynamic business landscape, a positive mindset has become not just an option but a necessity. A positive leadership style with the belief that, no matter what obstacles lie in our path, we must continue to move forward is characterized by resilience, optimism, support, and adaptability, qualities that are indispensable in today's dynamic and challenging business landscape.
For individuals, it's essential to maintain a positive mindset; for those in leadership roles, it's equally crucial to be positive leaders and cultivate a culture of positivity among their teams.
What is your takeaway on the magic of "life goes on." from Robert Frost? Share your experience to inspire others.

In today’s dynamic and globalized business landscape, as a leader, how do you build a rock star team? Do you hire candidates with the same mindset? Do you hire candidates with the same background? Or do you always aim for hiring the perfect candidates that are a perfect fit?
In my opinion, there is no such thing as perfect candidates that are a perfect fit. Effective leaders have the skill to identify the strengths and capabilities of individuals and how they can contribute to the overall success of a team.
Just like a symphony orchestra needs diverse instruments and musicians to create a harmonious masterpiece, the conductor will then guide, synchronize, and bring out the best from each individual player and section. Imagine if the orchestra consisted only of a single type of perfectly tuned instrument playing in unison. While the sound might be pleasing, it would lack the enchanting synergy of melodies, harmonies, and contrasting dynamics that different instruments bring to the performance.
For the same logic, a team composed solely of individuals with identical skills, backgrounds, and mindset may achieve a certain level of success, but it would lack the opportunity to tap into the full range of talents, creativity, and innovation that diverse individuals bring. Just as a conductor carefully selects and coordinates musicians of varying abilities and instruments to create a symphony, effective leaders recognize the unique value in each imperfect candidate, embrace diversity, leverage the unique yet complementary qualities of each team member, and channel the collective power into accomplishing extraordinary feats. It is through this harmonious collaboration, where different complementary talents blend seamlessly, that effective leaders empower team members to understand the impact they can make and how their unique individual strengths contribute to the overall team's success. This sense of value and purpose attracts high achievers who are motivated to stay committed and continuously strive for excellence. As a result, effective leaders can build and retain a rock star team that forms the foundation for building a transformative unicorn company.

👻 Ghosting Culture 👻
Lately, ghosting seems to become a prevalent topic on LinkedIn post, with many posts and comments suggesting that it has become the norm. A recent study by Indeed indicated that 76% of employers have been ghosted and the same study found that 28% of job seekers have ghosted employers. Another study found that out that 75% of 1,500 jobseekers have been ghosted by a company after a job interview. But are we truly comfortable with embracing this ghosting culture?
For employers and recruiters, ghosting not only creates frustration, delays in the hiring process, and a negative candidate experience, but it also has a significant effect on a company's image and reputation. Additionally, it can have significant effects on a company's image and reputation, contradicting the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and the culture of respect where people are recognized as valuable assets.
For jobseekers, ghosting damages professional reputation and results in missed networking opportunities. It's essential to consider the long-term implications of ghosting actions.
🤝 While ghosting may be influenced by various factors and individual circumstances, it's crucial to foster open communication and respectful professional interactions. Instead of resorting to ghosting, won’t providing genuine updates help promoting better communication and fostering long-term professional relationships?

Share your thoughts on how leaders in SaaS-based company can shift the mindset on cross organization collaboration and leap from building a software product to delivering a world-class Service.
Not long ago, I shared with an experienced Product Management leader about my believe that SaaS-based software company is effectively developing and selling a Service, not a software product, and a company-wide mindset change is crucial.
When designing and developing (or transitioning to) SaaS-based software company. Things like level of SLA can be supported, time-to-failure, time-to-recover, speed to deploy, frequency of deployment, ease of maintenance, COGS, cost to run, etc., needs to be factored into product design.
Delivery of SLA compliance, solution adoption, I&O cost (initial onboarding cost and subsequent incremental cost), data security & privacy, audit compliance, customer satisfaction & retention, etc. should also be included as part of the service and pricing strategy. Ultimately, all these leads to recurring booking, revenue, SaaS GM, and EBIDTA.
#Service (https://www.linkedin.com/feed/hashtag/?keywords=service&highlightedUpdateUrns=urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7044362284516720640)#SaaSBasedCompany (https://www.linkedin.com/feed/hashtag/?keywords=saasbasedcompany&highlightedUpdateUrns=urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7044362284516720640)#MindsetShift(https://www.linkedin.com/feed/hashtag/?keywords=mindsetshift&highlightedUpdateUrns=urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7044362284516720640)

In my previous post, I stressed that SaaS-based software companies are effectively selling a #service,(https://www.linkedin.com/feed/hashtag/?keywords=service&highlightedUpdateUrns=urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7046256412364075008) not a product.
Throughout my career in SaaS, I have heard many SaaS companies strive to offer SLA with four (4) 9s or five (5) 9s. Below are overly simplified areas to showcase how the "extra" 9 changes things drastically.
1. Is your SaaS service warrant a 99.99% or 99.999% SLA?
SLA Uptime || Downtime/Month || Downtime/Day
99.9% || 43.2 minutes || 1.44 minutes
99.99% || 4.32 minutes || 8.64 seconds
99.999% || 25.9 seconds || 0.87 seconds
2. Is the infrastructure ready for the extra 9s? Note the SLA from cloud providers. What does this mean to your SLA then? (My favorite question)
Cloud Provider || Instance-Level SLA || Region-Level SLA
AWS || 99.5% || 99.99%
Azure || 95% || 99.99%
Google || 99.5% || 99.99%
3. What is the impact to gross margin, COGS, and Subscription Fee (finance and sales favorite topic)
Assumption (for illustration purpose):
- Server is the only COGS
- only extra server is needed to achieve higher SLA
SLA || Servers || COGS || Subscription Fees || Gross Margin
99.9% || 2 || $240 || $1,200 || 80%
99.99% || 3 || $360 || $1,200 || 70%
99.999% || 4 || $480 || $1,200 || 60%

Is cloud-first strategy always the best approach to optimizing the infrastructure costs? Does adopting cloud-first strategy guarantee great ROI immediately and when business scaled?
Quick Illustration on cloud cost. (Ignore other costs such as data transfer, etc. for this quick illustration)
Small compute unit (2 vCPU, 4 GB Memory, 40 GB space): ~$25/month, $300/year
Qty: 1 | 1-Month: $25 | 1-Year: $300 | 3-Year: $3,600
Qty: 50 | 1-Month: $1,250 | 1-Year: $15,000 | 3-Year: $45,000
Qty: 1,000 | 1-Month: $25,000 | 1-Year: $300,000 | 3-Year: $900,000
Note: not all solutions work if they are not designed and built to run on a small compute unit.
As illustrated, cloud cost climbs up quickly. Ease of deployment could also lead to uncontrollable cloud sprawling (funny that this topic used to be server sprawling) and surprises in I&O cost.
When you are deep into cloud, the SaaS service offering and SLA are relying on cloud, there is no end of sight. The high I&O cost (OPEX to be more specific!) will result in gross margin and EBITDA impacts, affect company valuation…
As such, adopting cloud-first strategy should not be a technology-driven initiative aiming to optimize infrastructure cost, especially for SaaS companies. Cloud-first strategy must be a well thought through business and financial strategy.
Share your cloud strategy in the comment below.

In today's fast-paced business environment, mergers and acquisitions are commonplace, and as a leader, it is essential to maintain a cohesive team to build a high-performing multi-functional organization and retain top talent. One of the effective ways to achieve this is by designing an organization architecture that promotes visibility, eliminates potential conflicts of interest, removes internal competition, and fosters collaboration. This approach can help team members forge partnerships and work together to achieve common goals, ultimately leading to a more cohesive and productive work environment that motivates team members to contribute their best efforts towards achieving organizational success.
The organization architecture diagram in this post effectively communicates key insights about the structure and dynamics of a multi-functional organization. It serves as a guideline for how the organization operates, highlighting the following points:
1. How the teams complement each other in this multi-functional organization.
2. How the teams potentially impact each other, hence promoting collaboration and alignment among the teams.
3. How each team is a crucial building block of the entire organization, enabling services and supporting customers.
4. Removing any block compromises the stability of the services and customers, which, in turn, jeopardizes the overall stability of the organization.
5. The common goals among all teams are Services and Customers. Therefore, internal competition is counter-productive and should be avoided.
Share your approach, in the comment below, on how you maintain a cohesive team to build a high-performing multi-functional organization and retain top talent.

🌟 The Power of Positive Leadership 🌟
As leaders, we sometimes encounter highly talented team members who may face temporary underperformance due to reasons unknown to us. In such situations, what is the most effective way we can support and empower them to unleash their potential for excellence?
Remember the motivation and sense of support we felt as children when our parents said, "Go, go, I know you can do it"? Those words instilled in us a belief that we could change the world. Leading a highly talented but temporarily underperforming team member, especially a younger professional or a less-experienced individual, holds the same principle. Instead of focusing solely on underperformance, see beyond temporary setbacks and recognize the untapped long-term potential, redirect our focus towards nurturing innate talents and fostering growth.
Positive leaders lead and transform the team from the inside out. One of the most powerful recognition positive leaders give to their teams is demonstrating unwavering trust in their abilities, while also providing the necessary support, patience, and time required for growth. By acknowledging their distinctive strengths and allowing for the necessary development, positive leaders establish an environment where the team feels motivated, valued, and inspired to realize their full potential. This is how positive leaders cultivate a can-do culture and lead the team to consistently conquer challenges and achieve high-impact results.

In My Train of Thoughts
Earlier in my career, I had the privilege of working under the guidance of an exceptional leader who cultivated a high-performing and highly engaged team. His leadership style left a lasting impact on me, shaping my approach to leading diverse teams across various stages of my career.
Young professionals, as you embark on your journey towards becoming future leaders, it's crucial to develop these five essential skills:
1. Embrace Team Feedback: Throw the mindset of “I am the manager. I am in charge therefore I must decide” out of the window. Instead of solely relying on your own decisions, harness the collective power of your team by actively seeking and valuing their input. Remember, they are the subject matter experts, and their feedback is invaluable in shaping your strategies.
2. Take Action on Your team’s Input: It's not enough to simply ask for input; show your team that their opinions matter by implementing meaningful changes based on their feedback. This fosters a sense of ownership and collaboration within the team. Remember, smart and talented people don’t blindly do what they are told, they work on idea/vision that they believe in.
3. Foster a Supportive Environment: Create a safe space where team members feel comfortable expressing themselves and sharing their ideas. Be open to accepting their ideas, even if they surpass your own, as Steve Jobs famously said, “It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do. We hire smart people so they can tell us what to do"
4. Cultivate Trust: Build trust within your team by being transparent, reliable, and supportive of their professional growth. When your team feels comfortable admitting mistakes, discussing challenges openly, recommending resolutions, and looking to you for guidance, you know you've earned their trust and respect. Smart people work for leaders they trust. With trust, you cultivate rock star team with high retention.
5. Lead by Example: Set the standard for accountability and behavior alignment by exemplifying the values you wish to instill in your team. Cultivate a culture where high standards are maintained without constant reminders (I call this auto-pilot mode). By doing so, you'll transform from a manager to a true leader where you are shifting your focus on vision, strategies, goals, success…
